Greater Sudbury Utilities takes the safety of its workforce and the public very seriously.
Many of our workers carry out their duties in a hazardous environment and we are continually reviewing our policies and procedures to ensure that every one of our employees goes home safely at the end of each day. Employees at all levels and in all areas of the company have made a commitment to achieving an injury-free workplace.
We promote the safe use of electricity in a variety of ways. Public service announcements inform the public about possible hazards and education programs in schools teach children how to stay safe.
Power Outages
Periodically, scheduled interruptions are required to safely perform required maintenance on our system.
Pad-mounted transformers play a key role in our electrical system. Please be aware that we need at least 3 meters of clearance in front of the transformer (this can typically be identified as the side with the padlock) and at least 2 meters on the sides in order to perform safety checks or emergency work. If you have any trees, shrubs, greenery or fencing around the boxes, they’ll need to be removed to allow Greater Sudbury Hydro Inc. employees access to the service units.
Painting
As these green metal transformer boxes are the property of Greater Sudbury Utilities, painting by anyone other GSU, including the homeowner is not allowed. Artwork seen on green boxes has been done with special permission through our public art initiative, Power Up Project, with the UpHere Festival.
